Young ZD'ers

The Zimbabwean Democrat believes that young people in Zimbabwe are leading the way in shaping our new democratic society.

Unlike other political parties, ZD does not believe in relegating young people to second-class members through structures such as the youth wing. Our philosophy is simple, if you are old enough to vote, you are old enough to occupy leadership positions in the Democrats and play an influential role in defining its policies and approach to issues. If an issue is important to a young Zimbabwean, then it is important to the ZD and we will ensure that it is reflected in our policies and political campaigns.

Politicians often repeat the mantra that the youth are the future of this country. ZD believes that not only are you the future, but you are also our present. In almost every field, young Zimbabweans are showing themselves to be pioneers and are redefining old disciplines. It is for this reason that the Zimbabwean Democrat wants young Zimbabweans to play a defining role in this party and shake up some of the old, traditional ways in which politics operates in Zimbabwe.

As a young party, ZD believes that it is the perfect vehicle to take forwards the aspirations and attitudes of Zimbabwean youth. In order to do this, however, we need you to get involved and challenge us with your issues and ideas. Too many politicians in Zimbabwe like to speak on behalf of the youth, and believe that they can define this sector as a single entity. ZD believes that if there is a defining characteristic of the youth in Zimbabwe it is its diversity. We therefore want to hear from all the different groupings of young Zimbabweans so that our policies can reflect the full spectrum of young ZD.

The Zimbabwean Democrat is committed to ensuring that young Zimbabweans make the most of the opportunities within the party. We will provide training and support to help young people maximize their potential in the political arena.

One of the first issues we would like to hear your views on is how you would like to be defined. We believe that the term youth fails to capture the essence of Zimbabwean’s 18 – 35 generation. It is high time that this age group gets to choose how it wishes to be seen and we would welcome any suggestions you have on this. The best term or phrase that is submitted will then become the way that ZD defines this grouping in society.
